GPU-based Real-time Triggering in the NA62 Experiment
Over the last few years the GPGPU (General-Purpose computing on Graphics
Processing Units) paradigm represented a remarkable development in the world of
computing. Computing for High-Energy Physics is no exception: several works
have demonstrated the effectiveness of the integration of GPU-based systems in
high level trigger of different experiments. On the other hand the use of GPUs
in the low level trigger systems, characterized by stringent real-time
constraints, such as tight time budget and high throughput, poses several
challenges. In this paper we focus on the low level trigger in the CERN NA62
experiment, investigating the use of real-time computing on GPUs in this
synchronous system. Our approach aimed at harvesting the GPU computing power to
build in real-time refined physics-related trigger primitives for the RICH
detector, as the the knowledge of Cerenkov rings parameters allows to build
stringent conditions for data selection at trigger level. Latencies of all
components of the trigger chain have been analyzed, pointing out that
networking is the most critical one. To keep the latency of data transfer task
under control, we devised NaNet, an FPGA-based PCIe Network Interface Card
(NIC) with GPUDirect capabilities. For the processing task, we developed
specific multiple ring trigger algorithms to leverage the parallel architecture
of GPUs and increase the processing throughput to keep up with the high event
rate. Results obtained during the first months of 2016 NA62 run are presented
and discussed
The FPGA based trigger and data acquisition system for the CERN NA62 experiment
The main goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare K+ → π+vv decay, collecting about 100 events to test the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Readout uniformity of sub-detectors, scalability, efficient online selection and lossless high rate readout are key issues. The TDCB and TEL62 boards are the common blocks of the NA62 TDAQ system. TDCBs measure hit times from sub-detectors, TEL62s process and store them in a buffer, extracting only those requested by the trigger system following the matching of trigger primitives produced inside TEL62s themselves. During the NA62 Technical Run at the end of 2012 the TALK board has been used as prototype version of the L0 Trigger Processor
Progress report on the online processing upgrade at the NA62 experiment
A new FPGA-based low-level trigger processor has been installed at the NA62 experiment. It is intended to extend the features of its predecessor due to a faster interconnection technology and additional logic resources available on the new platform. With the aim of improving trigger selectivity and exploring new architectures for complex trigger computation, a GPU system has been developed and a neural network on FPGA is in progress. They both process data streams from the ring imaging Cherenkov detector of the experiment to extract in real time high level features for the trigger logic. Description of the systems, latest developments and design flows are reported in this paper
Light Detection System and Time Resolution of the NA62 RICH
A large RICH detector is used in NA62 to suppress the muon contamination in
the charged pion sample by a factor of 100 in the momentum range between 15 and
35 GeV/c. Cherenkov light is collected by 1952 photomultipliers placed at the
upstream end. In this paper the characterization of the photomultipliers and
the dedicated Frontend and Data Acquisition electronics are described, the time
resolution and the light detection efficiency measurement are presented.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figure
Fast algorithm for real-time rings reconstruction
The GAP project is dedicated to study the application of GPU in several contexts in which
real-time response is important to take decisions. The definition of real-time depends on
the application under study, ranging from answer time of μs up to several hours in case
of very computing intensive task. During this conference we presented our work in low
level triggers [1] [2] and high level triggers [3] in high energy physics experiments, and
specific application for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) [4] [5] and cone-beam CT [6].
Apart from the study of dedicated solution to decrease the latency due to data transport
and preparation, the computing algorithms play an essential role in any GPU application.
In this contribution, we show an original algorithm developed for triggers application, to
accelerate the ring reconstruction in RICH detector when it is not possible to have seeds
for reconstruction from external trackers
Prospects for at CERN in NA62
The NA62 experiment will begin taking data in 2015. Its primary purpose is a
10% measurement of the branching ratio of the ultrarare kaon decay , using the decay in flight of kaons in an unseparated
beam with momentum 75 GeV/c.The detector and analysis technique are described
here.Comment: 8 pages for proceedings of 50 Years of CP
ChPT tests at the NA48 and NA62 experiments at CERN
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of
rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ()
and Ke4(00) () with nearly one percent
background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching
rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new
inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral
Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new
data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the invariant mass
spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final
results from an analysis of about 400 rare
decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during
low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The
results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT
description.Comment: XIIth International Conference on Heavy Quarks and Leptons 2014,

Recent NA48/2 and NA62 results
The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented
statistics of rare kaon decays in the modes: () and ()
with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved
measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final
results from the analysis of 381 rare decay
candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented.

Performance of the NA62 trigger system
The NA62 experiment at CERN targets the measurement of the ultra-rare
K+ ->pi+ nu nu decay, and carries out a broad physics programme that includes probes for
symmetry violations and searches for exotic particles. Data were collected in 2016–2018
using a multi-level trigger system, which is described highlighting performance studies
based on 2018 data
